Who is ready for the Houston Rodeo?
It’s that time of year again here in Houston and everyone is looking forward to food and fun with the Houston rodeo. As a wonderful event in lots of Houstonians past from being little kids attending the rodeo at the Astro dome all of the festivities are just next door at NRG. The sights and smells that brings us back but there are a few things to plan for while trying to enjoy your time with everything to do at the rodeo. Hopefully an outline of everything can help you get to the activities you would like to attend.
More than 12,800 Texas FFA and 4-H members from more than 250 Texas counties compete in the junior show, including breeding and market livestock. Cattle competitions will be showcased in the NRG Center Tractor Supply Main Arena, and sheep, goats, and swine compete in the NRG Center East Arena. The livestock show also hosts several contests, including numerous judging activities, the Agricultural Mechanics Project Show, the Agricultural Public Speaking Contest the Texas 4-H Food Challenge, the State FFA Tractor Technician Contest and the new Agribotics competition.
This portion of the livestock show features exhibitors from near and far of all ages who are passionate about beef cattle, dairy cattle, dairy goats, Boer goats, llamas and alpacas, and rabbits and cavies, as well as sheep dog trials.
Youth compete for winning titles in beef cattle, dairy cattle, dairy goats, Boer goats, llamas and alpacas, breeding rabbits, and meat pen rabbits. The youth division does not require participants to be members of 4-H or FFA.
Top-placing exhibitors involved in the junior market livestock show and the School Art competition have the chance to participate in an auction at the NRG Arena Sales Pavilion. In 2015, auction totals set eight world records, each more than $100,000 and raised nearly $3 million in additional premiums for exhibitors. Auction sale prices also support the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Educational Fund.
Cutting competitions are a crowd favorite, as the horse and rider quickly work to separate calves from the herd. Similarly, see cowboys work together in the Ranch Sorting competitions.
Everyone is having fun, from 5-year-olds in the All Breed Youth Show to practiced riders in the Paint and Quarter Horse shows. Contestants must be under the age of 18 to participate in the Youth Horse Show.
Donkey and Mule Show
This event not only highlights donkey and mule competition, but it also features the popular mule pull, and the donkey single hitch obstacle driving contests. Competition also includes the “Ear of the Year” awards for the donkey and mule whose measurable ear spans are the widest.
Step into a Wild West movie and watch the Cowboy Mounted Shooting contestants as they maneuver horses while firing blanks from two .45 caliber single-action revolvers. The AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse Compeition and the Ranch Rodeo contests demonstrate everyday practices that have been used on ranches for centuries.
Speed and Roping Events
Fast and precise, these events will leave you impressed as skillful riders make their way through the course or try a hand at roping for the fastest time. 8 See the full schedule for event and activity times.
Indulge in fried foods, decadent desserts and tasty concoctions available at the Show! Explore the countless options along the row of food tents on Houston Rodeo Plaza and Circle Drive between NRG Center and the carnival. Food vendors also are located inside the NRG Center, NRG Arena, the carnival and NRG Stadium.
Gold Buckle Foodie
Become an official food enthusiast of the Houston Rodeo by trying all top eight Gold Buckle Foodie awardwinning culinary items. Participants will receive a koozie for tasting half of the items and a T-shirt for tasting all. Visit the Social Station at the entrance of Hall D in NRG Center for more information on the contest.
Find authentic Western items to add to your lifestyle from the more than 300 exhibitors at the Show. Visitors will find a wide range of exhibitors from fashion to home décor and more in NRG Center and NRG Arena. On March 10, the fifth annual Rocking the Rodeo Runway Fashion Show and Exhibitor Showcase will feature commercial exhibitors in the Main Arena.
Unpredictable action will have you sitting on the edge of your seat at the world’s most innovative rodeo featuring the sport’s best athletes. RodeoHouston is comprised of two different competitions: the Super Series and the Super
Shootout, presented by Crown Royal. Together, the competitions total a $2.17 million payout, with more than 300 contestants, and an annual attendance of 1.37 million fans. Each performance includes traditional rodeo events as well as fan favorites such as the calf scramble, mutton bustin’ and chuck wagon races. The competitions are followed by a firstclass concert with top entertainers performing on a state-of-the-art rotating stage in the middle of the rodeo arena.
